On behalf of the Board of Directors of Alli’s Journey, we would like to thank Amanda and Eric from Crestwood School for winning $5000 for our charity! Their winning presentation for the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative received a standing ovation, and deservedly so.

The money from YPI will be put towards the Comfort Room at Wellspring, a program that provides young adults with cancer with an opportunity to meet and network with other young adults, in a relaxed and unstructured way.

We are thrilled and know that Alli would be so very proud! Bravo!

We are pleased to announce our spring fundraising event at Yuk Yuk’s Toronto club on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 8pm. We are now selling tickets for $30 each or a table of four tickets for $120 which guarantees a cabaret style table for your group.

We will have your tickets on hold at the box office for pick up the night of the show or you may arrange for us to mail the tickets to you. If you would prefer to purchase your tickets in person, please email rebecca at rebecca@allisjourney.ca and arrangements will be made.

The evening will have raffles and door prizes. Food and bar service is available for an extra cost at the club.

The headliner act will be announced shortly along with the comedians for the evening.

This movie was not an easy one to sit through, especially for someone in my position, but I believe that it is one that should be seen by everyone. People must realize the plight of the young adult with cancer, and their special circumstances. I think that everyone who left that theatre, had a different perspective to life.

I would sincerely like to thank Cineplex for making this evening happen. We were able to educate a new group of people about the work of Alli’s Journey. To our door prize donors, Mark Lash Jewelry, Shaynee’s Fine Gifts, TIFF, and Cineplex Odeon, thank you. To Howard Orfus, thank you for being our refreshment sponsor.

Cancer Takes A Comedic Turn

This is so inspiring! Angela Zhang, a 17-year-old from California has just landed a $100,000 scholarship from the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. It was awarded to Angela for her research in utilizing nanotechnology to potentially eradicate cancer stem cells and leave healthy cells intact. Zhang logged almost 1000 hours in the lab designing a gold and iron oxide-based nanoparticle to target cancer stem cells.

One of the competition judges compared Zhang’s microscopic nanoparticle to a “Swiss Army knife of cancer treatment” that can seek out cancer cells and then destroy them.

Syrelle (L) and I, Jacquie (R) walked the 5K for Alli’s Journey at the Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon on Sunday, October 16th and arrived at the finish line after one hour.  It was very moving to join the thousands of people, families, people in wheelchairs, many decked out in costumes and all for a cause close to their hearts.  It was a lot of fun!

In fact, it was so much fun that we are going to be making this an annual event for Alli’s Journey! We are already planning for next year’s walk/run and want you to be a part of our team! More details to follow….

WHY: The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC) is currently conducting a study that looks at the concerns, issues and challenges that people diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers experience when the person with cancer returns to work during or after treatment. The feedback we receive from participants will help inform future programs, services and resources.

WHAT: We are conducting an online survey that will ask questions about your return to work experiences both during and after treatment and about any concerns, issues and challenges you experienced.

HOW LONG: The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete

WHO:

If you are:

· 18 years of age or older AND

· Have had a cancer diagnosis in the past 5 years AND

· Were working at the time of your cancer diagnosis

OR

If you are:

· 18 years of age or older AND

· Have been an informal caregiver (i.e. not providing care in a professional capacity) for someone who had a cancer diagnosis in the past 5 years AND

· Were working at the time of your caregiving experience

…then we would like to hear about your work-related experiences.
